Alabama Bluesman Inaguraual Festival Takes Place in Holt, Al.
July 17th 2010- Johnny Shines Blues Festival is schedule to take place August 28th.
Tuscaloosa, Al. (Press Release) July 17th 2010
It has taken more than 20 years for Carroline Shines, the daughter of the late Bluesman, Johnny Shines, to get help continuing his legacy. For the first time in Johnny Shine’s musical career, his neighborhood has given him much deserved notoriety. In December 2009, after much hard work and pursuit by Carroline Shines, 4710 11Street in Holt, Al became Johnny Shines St. This was more than just a milestone event; it was a birthday gift to Carroline. Her birthday is December 26th. “I felt like Daddy was smiling on me that day and wishing me Happy Birthday’, said Carroline. Carroline remembers the day and said “That day, TMobile network went down. I tried to call everyone from my phone but I could not reach them. As I watched them hang the sign, I cried and shared that moment all alone”.
The Johnny Shines Blues Festival was established to create lasting memories of Mr. Shine as well as acknowledge his contributions to the Blues world. Johnny Shines was on-the-road with Robert Johnson for three years. Music historian and author Peter Guralnick has written: "When the definitive history of the blues comes to be written, Johnny Shines will take his place with Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Robert Johnson & Elmore James."
Keith Ruff and DieDra Hurdle encouraged Carroline to begin an annual festival in recognition of her father. “To me, this should have been done a long time ago, I’m in the music business and I see legendary Blues singers with their festival, so why not a Johnny Shines Festival” said DieDra. The event will take place August 28th 2010. The line-up of entertainment is a sure win. Head-lining is Bobby Rush, Before Bobby there will be Musicians from as far as Iowa, such as Kent Burnside and the New Generation, DieDra and The Ruff Pro Band, Kent Dushaune, Li’ Gee Weevil and more. This ensures to be a day to remember. The community of Holt is excited and more than willing to celebrate with Caroline, as she continues her father’s legacy...

Ladies & Gentlemen…
Dee Bradley: “Mr. Entertainment!”
(323) 942-4104
Simply put, Dee Bradley is one of the most scintillating mega voices you’ve never heard in the Rhythm & Blues genre – UNTIL NOW.
Dee Bradley was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama. While still a baby, the soothing sounds of gospel music sheltered him from the harsh realities of the Old South. His beloved grandmother’s soulful voice provided constant reassurance that everything would be all right in that ‘great getting up morning.’ That is why his roots in the gospel are imbedded deeply. Just ask those lucky parishioners of the legendary 16th Avenue Baptist Church who experienced the power of magnetism through a precocious youngster named Dee Bradley. He lifted spirits and kept hands clapping many a Sunday morning with stirring renditions of “Jesus Keep Me Near the Cross and “I Won’t Complain.”
Bradley’s ascension into the upper echelon of great singers was buttressed by his proximity to Birmingham’s plethora of amazing musicians and singers. The city was literally a smorgasbord of talent and thereby provided a wonderful platform for a young artist to flourish – which is exactly what Bradley did. By the time he was 10 years old, Bradley was a full-throated vocalist and accomplished drummer, guitarist and pianist. By his 12th birthday, he’d attracted the attention and mentorship of the renowned Cleve Eaton, a widely acclaimed bassist who’d performed with the original Ramsey Lewis Trio (which featured on drums Maurice White, the founder of Earth, Wind & Fire).
Dee Bradley worked tirelessly at his craft and soon emerged on the local R&B scene as a featured vocalist with the Poo Nanny Review. The Poo Nanny Review was considered a groundbreaking ensemble that crossed the strictly enforced color line by playing white colleges and universities throughout the South during the 1970s. For the next 10 years, Bradley was at the forefront of that musical revolution and he captivated audiences with his flair for entertainment and a CLASSIC R&B voice. Along his musical journey, Bradley mastered the essence of showmanship by studying the styles and mannerisms of music icons Joe Williams, Sarah Vaughn, Buddy Rich and Hand Crawford. These and other musical influences helped shape his musical and performance identity. He also credits his sidekick with the Poo Nanny Review, the late Courtland “C C” Jones with advancing his musical growth and professional development.
“Mr. Entertainment”
The year was 1985. That is when Dee Bradley evolved into “Mr. Entertainment” and launched his solo career. He toured the world and developed a reputation as the ‘singer you didn’t want to follow onto a stage.”
It was during those halcyon days on the road that Bradley decided to wade into the waters of songwriting. He discovered the symmetry between his life experiences and telling insightful stories through a song. By 2007, he’d finally cobbled together the material that would be the foundation of his debut album, “The Candy Man.” While living in Los Angeles he connected with producer Leon Haywood (“I Want to do Something Freaky to You,” “She’s A Bad Mama Jamma,” et al) and recorded his seminal album at Haywood’s EveJIm Records. The album has steadily climbed the charts on a wide range of play list around the world. The album’s staying power can be attributed to the breadth and scope of the compositions. From the cautionary tale of a fading love affair (“How Did I Wake Up With A Stranger?”) to the rousing blues manifesto (Too Much Man to Cry), “The Candy Man” is a compilation for all seasons and all reasons.
Stay tuned. Dee Bradley is back in the studio, feverishly working on his next masterpiece – aptly titled “The Classic Voice”. So at first chance you get, check out “The Candy Man”. You’ll be glad you did.

JOYCE COBB WITH THE MICHAEL JEFRY STEVENS TRIO (Archer Records ARR 31934) STREET DATE: August 17, 2010
Joyce Cobb-vocals & harmonica, Michael Jefrey Stevens-piano, Jonathan Wires-bass, Renardo Ward-drums
http://www.myspace.com/joycecobb

http://archerrecords.com/
On their resultant self-titled album Joyce Cobb with the Michael Jefry Stevens Trio, Stevens leads the rhythm section in deftly complementing Cobb's full range of honey sweet vocals with carefully composed peaks and valleys. Beginning with the distressed album-opening "Moanin'," they collectively deliver 12 tales that ebb and flow as a dialogue between enflamed passions and desperate solitude. Drawing on her own uniquely developed mixture of silky jazz and aching soul, Cobb scours the depths of cheerless heartache ("It's Over Now") and profound longing ("If You Never Come to Me"), before illuminating the heights of hopeful anticipation ("Jitterbug Waltz") and unwavering love ("My Heart Belongs to Daddy", "If You Know Love"). Throughout, Stevens provides vibrantly articulated and lyrical solos, as Wires and Ward glide naturally between moods and tempos with remarkable ease and style. The outcome is a magnificently crafted album coursing with life and full of delicate flourishes resulting from an incredible understanding between the full-bodied musical personalities of Cobb and Stevens. Joining her is Memphis-by-way-of-New York pianist Michael Jefry Stevens, who, like Cobb, has never been one to sit idly around. In fact, at present Stevens heads or plays a part in a number of jazz ensembles across the country, having played on 62 released albums during his career. In addition, he was recently honored with an induction into the prestigious and diverse company of Steinway Artists, including past legends like Irving Berlin and Cy Coleman, as well as modern players such as Billy Joel and Harry Connick, Jr.
Look for Joyce Cobb with the Michael Jefry Stevens Trio online and in stores this summer, after which the ensemble will embark on a U.S. tour this September beginning at the Al Sears Jazz Festival, with European dates in Switzerland, Germany, and more to follow in October. Project photos, audio samples, and more, are available here on the Archer Records site http://www.archer-records.com/ or the Michael Jefry Stevens homepage at michaeljefrystevens.com.

The Latest News You Can Use From Award-Winning SoCal Blues Group…
Papa J (center) and Blues Gone South are nominated in the “Best Americana, Blues or Roots Artist” category
for the 20th Annual Los Angeles Music Awards this year. The Orange County band was also selected a “Hot 100
Artist For 2009” by respected MUSIC CONNECTION magazine. They’re pictured here last December at the famed
Voodoo Lounge in Riverside, the home of Wild West Guitars Studios, where they performed with Gary Hoey.
“Blues Gone South embodies all blues traditions with a strong repertoire of original material and cover songs…(front person) Papa J has a surprisingly superb set of pipes…the band’s playing is precise and impassioned…each musician is a master of his instrument. Blues Gone South easily covers the entire blues spectrum and then some.” MUSIC CONNECTION
BLUES GONE SOUTH NOMINATED IN THE “BEST AMERICANA, BLUES OR ROOTS ARTIST” CATEGORY FOR UPCOMING 20TH ANNUAL LOS ANGELES MUSIC AWARDS
Next Live Performance: THE OLDE SHIP in Santa Ana/Sat. July 10
Blues Gone South (a/k/a BGS) started off 2010 with a bang, with the honor of receiving a nomination in the “Best Americana, Blues or Roots Artist” category for the 20th Annual Los Angeles Music Awards (LAMA), taking place November at Paramount Studios in Hollywood.
Blues Gone South perform live at The Olde Ship, 1120 W. 17th St., Santa Ana, Saturday, July 10. 8:30-11:30 p.m. Free. Info: (714) 550-6700 or www.theoldeship.com.
Speaking about the band’s recent performance at the Whisky A G-Go for a Los Angeles Music Awards showcase, LAMA Executive Producer Al Bowman raved, “fronted by the well known and respected Papa J, this band ruled the stage with a fast paced set of Blues rock unlike anything else from this event. The musicians in this band were absolutely amazing. The guitarist reminded me of Stevie Ray Vaughn. The energy level put out by Blues Gone South was overwhelming,” Bowman concluded.
Blues Gone South pictured at House of Blues/Anaheim, where they perform regularly. The band
also received “2009 Blues Group of the Year” honors at the 5th Annual South Bay Music Awards.
BGS finished 2009 with a flourish, capturing a coveted “Hot 100 Artist of 2009” nod from respected trade publication, MUSIC CONNECTION, in the magazine’s year-end issue.
The band organized and headlined the first-ever “Chicago Blues Night” at House of Blues/Anaheim last May, playing to an appreciative, sizable crowd. Last April they were featured on the nationally-syndicated radio show, BLUES DELUXE.
Fronted by harpist-vocalist Papa J (Jeffrey Hudson) and also featuring drummer Kofi Baker (son of legendary Cream drummer, Ginger Baker), BGS play a smokin’ hot mix of original blues songs as well as classic Blues numbers in a wailing, Southside-of-Chicago style. BGS are rooted in the tradition of early 20th century blues fueled by the energy of the new millennium. The excitement created by the front line, along with their unique originals tunes, makes this show far above that of a typical “blues” band.
“This is a serious fistful of the blues by an expert team of players. Blues Gone South is the authentic article,” writes Rob Swick of ALL ACCESS MAGAZINE. “It’s a fact that when you’ve got the blues, you’ve “Gotta Keep Movin’,” and Blues Gone South is a darned good band to help you on your way!,” the review concludes.
“Papa J” is a great showman who dazzles audiences with his howlin’ harmonica and trademark ‘gentlemanly howls’ directed at the female members of BGS’s audience. This front man is the real McCoy – dedicated to only the finest blues traditions. Baker is known throughout the country as one of the top timekeepers and makes Blues Gone South swing and really take off when they get charged up.
BGS has shared the stage with James Cotton, Taj Mahal, Bobby Bland, and the Fabulous Thunderbirds. They have played B.B. Kings, The Coach House, House of Blues, and Doheny Blues Festival, to name a few. Their debut CD is entitled GOTTA KEEP MOVIN (Hound Dog Records).

On Friday, June 18, 2010, a rare performance of five talented Alabama blues songstresses sharing the stage will make for a "Wang Dang Doodle" celebration. The show will be held at Little Willie's Blues and Jazz Club in downtown Tuscaloosa's Temerson Square beginning at 8 p.m.
Sweet Claudette, Shar-Baby, Carroline Shines, Debbie Bond and Rachel Edwards are five women billed on the Alabama Blues Women Showcase. Each brings to the table a different style of blues, and all hail or originate from the state of Alabama. Birmingham native Sweet Claudette now resides in Detroit and produces an urban blues sound that entertains audiences on U.S. and Canadian tours. Shar-Baby moved to Birmingham from Indiana after playing several years at Old Memphis, Alabama's Freedom Creek Festival, and she has recently gone on European tour with her down-home juke joint blues. Tuscaloosa's Carroline Shines, daughter of the late, great Johnny Shines, is a classic and soulful belter, and her showmanship brings audiences to their feet every time. Debbie Bond has played with many Alabama blues legends and brought out her own style of traditional-meets-contemporary blues that she has performed in the U.S. and overseas in Europe, where she was recently the cover story of the prestigious IL Blues magazine of Italy. Rachel Edwards is an up-and-coming star who has been the Alabama Blues Project advanced band's lead singer for several years and recently performed in the 2010 International Blues Challenge Youth Showcase.
For more information, you may contact the Alabama Blues Project at (205) 752-6263 or Little Willie's at (205) 344-9986. Also, for video and audio samples of these blues women, visit their website at alabamablues.org/abws.htm.
More About the Artists . . .
SWEET CLAUDETTE:
Blues songstress Sweet Claudette is a mistress of raw and funky urban blues and a force to be reckoned with. Her down home style is contagious and guaranteed to raise the roof!
Born in Heflin, Alabama, her family soon migrated north and eventually settled in Detroit, Michigan, home of the Motor City blues. She always retained her southern connections and returned to live in Alabama as an adult and now moves back and forth between her homes in Detroit and Alabama.
As a performer of classics and her own original songs, she is an ambassador of low-down urban blues. With six albums under her belt, this blues woman cites Alberta Adams, Etta James, B.B. King, Katie Webster, and John Lee Hooker as her biggest influences. Aside from her relentless travels and music making, Claudette finds time to share her knowledge and experience with kids through a Math in Music Program that she created in partnership with Blues in the Schools.
Sweet Claudette continues to gain international acclaim while performing at festivals, clubs and lounges in the United States and Canada. Anyone who has had the pleasure of meeting Claudette Harrell Manning can surely tell you why they call her Sweet!
Also catch Sweet Claudette in Alabama on Saturday,
June 12th at the Magic City Blues Society Junkyard Juke
at 2:30 p.m. at Trey Taylor's Studio in Avondale and
Saturday, June 19th at Mr. Gip's Juke Joint in Bessemer!
SHAR-BABY:
Often compared to Jessie Mae Hemphill, Alabama blues singer/guitar player Shar-Baby's good-time soulful blues gets the house rocking and feet stomping.
Shar-Baby first fell in love with the blues aged 6, after hearing a recording of Hubert Sumlin, Howlin Wolfs legendary guitarist, and it became her dream to follow in his footsteps. She comes from a very musical family and her father was a gospel singer, who opened for many greats including Sam Cooke, the Dixie Humingbirds, and the Blind Boys of Alabama. Music was in her bones from the beginning and she still plays the Harmony electric guitar her Dad bought her in the early 60's. She formed her first band as a teenager with her sister and they called themselves the Braylock Sisters. Over the years, Shar has traveled from North to South living and performing her upbeat blues.
Born in South Bend, Indiana, Shar moved for a time to Pensacola, Florida. When the late, great Willie King booked Shar Baby for his annual Freedom Creek Blues Festival, she fell in love with the state, reconnected with her Alabama roots, and finally settled in Birmingham, Alabama, where she is a regular at local blues clubs and the famous Mr. Gips Juke Joint. All her life she'd heard stories from her great grandmother, who was born and raised in Jackson Gap, Alabama, and she says that moving to Alabama felt like finally coming home.
Shar has spread her blues to audiences in top clubs and festivals across the United States, England and Spain. She has shared the bill with many greats, including the Legendary Sam Lay, Denise LaSalle, T-Model Ford, Honeyboy Edwards, Paul Oscher, Jerry Portnoy, Kent Burnside, Lightenin' Malcolm and Cedric Burnside, Bob Margolin, Nappy Brown and Deborah Coleman. Since Shar-Baby has begun her blues career, she has successfully recorded three CDs - My Life, Just Jukin and The Blues is Here To Stay and she is currently working on her fourth CD, Rockin the Blues . Shar-Baby's performance is upbeat and electrifying - she truly captures the essence of the blues!
CARROLINE SHINES:
One of Alabamas best-kept secrets is the talented blues singer Carroline Shines who is carrying on the deep blues tradition she learned from her father, the late, great, world-renowned Johnny Shines. A regular on the Alabama festival and club circuit, she sings her own brand of the blues. Her powerful, soul stirring vocals and commanding stage presence leave crowds eager for more!
As the daughter of outstanding bluesman Johnny Shines (one of the few to travel with the legendary Robert Johnson), Carroline grew up in a rich musical environment with her father and his many blues-playing friends as her mentors. She dedicated her early years to raising a family and singing in her church and local bands. Since her children have grown and flown the coop, Carroline has dedicated more time working with the Alabama Blues Project helping to educate the next generation about the blues. She is also working hard to keep her father's memory alive and in December, 2009, Carroline successfully had a local street named in honor of her father. With her raw gospel tinged vocals and warm, engaging stage presence, Carroline Shines inspires crowds wherever she sings!
Also see Carroline at Wentzel's in Tuscaloosa
on June 19th for an AIDS benefit concert.
DEBBIE BOND:
Blues singer, guitar player and songwriter Debbie Bond has been paying her dues to play the blues in the Alabama backwoods for over 30 years and performs with soul and emotion. She has been described as sounding like a cross between Bonnie Raitt and Janice Joplin but Debbie does it her own way with a mix of house rockin' covers and originals. . . Bond is fully licensed to thrill!
Debbie has been associated with many great blues masters, starting with sharing her band with the late, great Johnny Shines. She has since worked with or performed alongside Jerry "Boogie" McCain, James Peterson, Eddie Kirkland, Kenny Neal and many more, as well as touring in the US and Europe playing guitar with Lil' Jimmy Reed, Little Whitt and Big Bo, Eddie Kirkland and Sam Lay. Most recently, Bond was guitar player for the outstanding Alabama bluesman Willie King.
Born in Los Angeles, California, her family moved to England when she was eight years old, where she fell in love with the blues and formed her first band. At age 22, Debbie visited Alabama and was surprised and delighted to discover Alabama's rich blues music culture. She decided to stay and dedicated herself to bringing the amazing Alabama blues to a wider audience. In 1995 she co-founded the Alabama Blues Project, an organization with a mission to preserve and promote the rich, living heritage of Alabama blues. She has received numerous awards for her work in blues education and together with the staff and musicians at the Alabama Blues Project has introduced the blues to tens of thousands of children and adults. She is a regular on the Southeast club and festival circuit and has performed overseas in England, Ireland, Scotland, Germany, Luxemberg, France, Switzerland, and Italy.
RACHEL EDWARDS:
For as long as she can remember, 20 year old blues singer Rachel Edwards has had a love for singing. Don't let her youth mislead you - Rachael has a rich, soulful and enchanting sound beyond her years!
Rachel's childhood was filled with the sounds of Southern soul, blues and R & B, and her home's sound track was flavored with Sam Cook, Otis Redding and Aretha Franklin. In school she was exposed to classical music and a gospel choir and knew that being a singer and performer was her dream in life. At the age of 15, Rachel was introduced to the Alabama Blues Project and got her first real taste of blues performing. Like a duck to water she found her home! With the Alabama Blues Project, she was able to closely work with - and perform with - blues legends like Willie King, Sam Lay, Bobby Rush, Eddie Kirkland and Little Jimmy Reed. She also connected with blues divas like Carroline Shines and B. J. Miller and performed at venues and festivals across the South. Most recently, Rachel showcased with the ABP advanced band at the 2010 International Blues Challenge in Memphis.
Whether she is singing blues classics or her own original compositions, Rachel's powerful emotional approach demonstrates a broad expressive range. Her powerful stage presence is immediate and her songs hit with a deep, heartfelt sincerity. Remember the name, because Rachel Edwards is a sensational star with a bright future!

Santa Barbara-Based Guitar Guru Alastair Greene Joins Alan Parsons Live Project;
*Performing Locally: MOVINO WINE BAR in Ojai/Saturday, May 22*
Greene’s “Walking In Circles” Featured On ALL ABOARD THE BLUES Compilation
“The Alastair Greene Band has achieved an elusive result with “Walking In Circles,”waxing a blues-rock album tha holds appeal for traditionalists…the rhythm section never fails to swing, providing a nuanced, true-blues launch pad for Greene’s guitar...” BLUES REVUE
(OJAI) – Santa Barbara-based blues/rock guitarist Alastair Greene brings his eclectic musical sounds to Ojai this weekend, performing at the Movino Wine Bar, 308 E. Ojai Ave., Ojai, Saturday, May 22. 9 p.m. Free. Info: (805) 646-1555 or log onto www.movinowinebar.com.
The multi-dimensional musician – who also fronts a popular tribute to guitar great Eric Clapton known as “The Return of Slowhand” -- was recently announced as the new full-time guitarist for the Alan Parsons Live Project, the famed progressive rock band fronted by multi-instrumentalist Alan Parsons known for such hits as “Eye in the Sky,” “Time,” and “I Robot,” among others. Greene kicked off his guitar duties in the Alan Parsons Live Project with shows in Israel and more this past March.
In other news, Greene’s title track from “Walking In Circles” is included on the just-released compilation, ALL ABOARD THE BLUES (Errorcraft Records).
Greene is receiving stellar reviews for his just-released CD, WALKING IN CIRCLES. “You will be hard-pressed to find another young guitarist whose work demonstrates a better example of both from where the blues has come as well as to where it may be headed,” raves BLUESROCKERS. “Alastair Greene and his band aim to please as they dish out a swingin’ session of five feel-good covers and six originals…Greene sings with spirit and tells it like it is while his electric guitar adds a stimulating sizzle that punctuates hard,” writes SOUTHLAND BLUES. “Walking In Circles is anything but a rehashing of the longtime S.B. stalwart’s multifaceted musical past,” states the SANTA BARBARA INDEPENDENT.
Since his 2002 debut CD A LITTLE WISER, Alastair Greene (known as ‘AG’ by friends and fans) has released two live CDs and a collaboration with French blues guitar hero Frank ‘Paris Slim’ Goldwasser on Riatsala Music. Greene also played guitar on recent releases by Alan
Alastair Greene/Press Release
Parsons (2006 Grammy-nominated ‘A Valid Path); Aynsley Dunbar (2008 release ‘Mutiny’); as well 2 CDs on the Delta Groove Record Label: Frank Goldwasser’s 2007 release ‘Bluju’ and Mitch Kashmar’s 2006 release ‘Wake Up and Worry’. The Alastair Greene Band has been performing live for over 10 years in various incarnations. Greene still performs regularly with Mitch Kashmar, Frank Goldwasser, and other blues and roots acts.
WALKING IN CIRCLES features 6 original songs and 5 covers ranging from the Elmore James-influenced title track and the deep Muddy Waters vibe on ‘Pocket Full of Change’ to the Gov’t Mule-style reading of ‘Get Out Of My Life Woman’ and the hard-boogie ZZ Top-inspired interpretation of ‘Cut You Loose’. In addition to stellar reviews, the disc is receiving regular airplay overseas in France, Belgium, Croatia, as well as Canada. Mitch Kashmar (currently playing with 70s Latin-funk band WAR) lends his legendary harmonica playing to 5 tracks as well as piano on a pair of songs. The Albert Collins classic instrumental ‘Don’t Lose Your Cool’ is given an original treatment in which Greene and Kashmar play the melody in unison before throwing down a couple of terrifying solos. The groove and title of ‘Back Alley Strut’ (an AG original) reflects the influence of funky New Orleans band The Meters, while the comical ‘Drunk Again’ is a shuffle reminiscent of the updated Jimmy Reed style that the Vaughan Brothers popularized in the early 80s. Greene also utilizes his first instrument (the tenor saxophone) on the fast swing ‘Look Out Baby’, which may feature the most blazing guitar solo on the record.
WALKING IN CIRCLES is Greene’s tribute to his Blues heroes and influences as well as his bid to re-establish himself as one of the era’s best up and coming Blues-Rock guitarists. “I love this music and want to be respectful of the form and history yet still be true to myself and my musical goals,” says Greene. “If That means things start to rock out, get experimental, loud and crazy, or I choose to cover more traditional territory, it’s all part of what I love about the Blues and its musical off shoots.” None other than Alligator Records founder Bruce Iglauer recently told Greene, “You definitely have talent. I’m hearing you as being a strong player with a good blues-rock feel and some real chops.” Legendary British studio wizard and solo artist Alan Parsons was quoted as saying, “Alastair should be out playing with the biggest bands in the world. I believe it's just a matter of time.” Regardless of quotes, resumes’, and high profile names, WALKING IN CIRCLES is sure to perk up some ears, put some smiles on some faces, and get some feet tappin’. It may even inspire some booty shakin’, head bangin’, and spontaneous partyin’. The Blues is for everyone, from “those about to rock” to those in their rocking chairs. Alastair will show you how and why.
