2010 FREEDOM CREEK BLUES FESTIVAL TO
FEATURE JODY WILLIAMS AND EDDIE KIRKLAND

The Rural Members Association is happy to announce that the Freedom Creek Festival will take place on May 28 and 29, 2010, at its usual location in Old Memphis, Pickens County, Alabama. Inspired by the late, great and much-loved Willie King, this festival is now in its 13th year at the same location, on the land where Willie King lived for many years before his untimely passing in March, 2009.

The festival aims to showcase local and regional musicians alongside better know national and international headline performers, and this year is no exception! Along with local performers such as "Birmingham" George Conner and Clarence Davis and regional artists such as Birmingham's own Elnora Spencer and Atlanta-based Mudcat, this year's festival features Jody Williams, an outstanding guitarist originally from Mobile. According to Wikipedia, "Williams cut his teeth gigging with a string of blues musicians, notably Memphis Minnie, Elmore James and Otis Spann. After touring with West Coast piano player Charles Brown, Williams established himself as a session player with Chess Records. At Chess, Williams met Howlin’ Wolf, recently arrived in Chicago from Memphis, Tennessee, and was hired by Wolf as the first guitarist in his new Chicago-based band . . .". The veteran bluesman Eddie Kirkland will also be performing on Saturday evening - a classic and deeply experienced bluesman who, along with a prolific performing and recording career, spent many years playing guitar with John Lee Hooker. Friday night will feature the musical legacy of R. L. Burnside in the form of Kent and Gary Burnside, two great musicians who have performed regularly in Birmingham.

Since its inception, the festival has grown each year, attracting supporting grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Alabama State Council on the Arts and the Black Belt Community Foundation, as well as the Music Maker Relief Foundation. Despite its remote location, it has featured in press as far afield as the Chicago Tribune and UK's Blues and Rhythm magazine and attracted a truly international audience.

The festival is presented by the Rural Members Association, the non-profit organization that Willie King founded as a vehicle for this festival and for his extensive community work. The organization is dedicated to continue Willie's legacy and present this festival in the spirit of love, peace and togetherness that Willie embodied.

For more information, please check the web at www.willie-king.com or call (205) 752-6263.

Santa Barbara-Based Guitar Guru Alastair Greene Joins Alan Parsons Live Project

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                      Contact: Doug Deutsch Publicity Services

 Santa Barbara-Based Guitar Guru Alastair Greene Joins  Alan Parsons Live Project;

*Performing Locally: MOVINO WINE BAR in Ojai/Saturday, May 22*

Greene’s “Walking In Circles” Featured On ALL ABOARD THE BLUES Compilation

The Alastair Greene Band has achieved an elusive result with “Walking In Circles,”waxing a blues-rock album tha holds appeal for traditionalists…the rhythm section never fails to swing, providing a nuanced, true-blues launch pad for Greene’s guitar...                               BLUES REVUE

(OJAI) – Santa Barbara-based blues/rock guitarist Alastair Greene brings his eclectic musical sounds to Ojai this weekend, performing at the Movino Wine Bar, 308 E. Ojai Ave., Ojai, Saturday, May 22. 9 p.m. Free. Info: (805) 646-1555 or log onto www.movinowinebar.com.

The multi-dimensional  musician – who also fronts a popular tribute to guitar great Eric Clapton known as “The Return of Slowhand” -- was recently announced as the new full-time guitarist for the Alan Parsons Live Project, the famed progressive rock band fronted by multi-instrumentalist Alan Parsons  known for such hits as “Eye in the Sky,” “Time,” and “I Robot,” among others. Greene kicked off his guitar duties in the Alan Parsons Live Project with shows in Israel and more this past March.

In other news, Greene’s title track from “Walking In Circles” is included on the just-released compilation,  ALL ABOARD THE BLUES (Errorcraft Records).

Greene is receiving stellar reviews for his just-released CD, WALKING IN CIRCLES. “You will be hard-pressed to find another young guitarist whose work demonstrates a better example of both from where the blues has come as well as to where it may be headed,” raves BLUESROCKERS. “Alastair Greene and his band aim to please as they dish out a swingin’ session of five feel-good covers and six originals…Greene sings with spirit and tells it like it is while his electric guitar adds a stimulating sizzle that punctuates hard,” writes SOUTHLAND BLUES. “Walking In Circles is anything but a rehashing of the longtime S.B. stalwart’s multifaceted musical past,” states the SANTA BARBARA INDEPENDENT.

Since his 2002 debut CD A LITTLE WISER,  Alastair Greene (known as ‘AG’ by friends and fans) has released two live CDs and a collaboration with French blues guitar hero Frank ‘Paris Slim’ Goldwasser on Riatsala Music. Greene also played guitar on recent releases by Alan

                                Alastair Greene/Press Release

Parsons (2006 Grammy-nominated ‘A Valid Path);  Aynsley Dunbar (2008 release ‘Mutiny’); as well 2 CDs on the Delta Groove Record Label: Frank Goldwasser’s 2007 release ‘Bluju’ and Mitch Kashmar’s 2006 release ‘Wake Up and Worry’. The Alastair Greene Band has been performing live for over 10 years in various incarnations. Greene still performs regularly with Mitch Kashmar, Frank Goldwasser, and other blues and roots acts.

WALKING IN CIRCLES features 6 original songs and 5 covers ranging from the Elmore James-influenced title track and the deep Muddy Waters vibe on ‘Pocket Full of Change’ to the Gov’t Mule-style reading of ‘Get Out Of My Life Woman’ and the hard-boogie ZZ Top-inspired interpretation of ‘Cut You Loose’. In addition to stellar reviews, the disc is receiving regular airplay overseas in France, Belgium, Croatia, as well as Canada. Mitch Kashmar (currently playing with 70s Latin-funk band WAR) lends his legendary harmonica playing to 5 tracks as well as piano on a pair of songs. The Albert Collins classic instrumental ‘Don’t Lose Your Cool’ is given an original treatment in which Greene and Kashmar play the melody in unison before throwing down a couple of terrifying solos. The groove and title of ‘Back Alley Strut’ (an AG original) reflects the influence of funky New Orleans band The Meters, while the comical ‘Drunk Again’ is a shuffle reminiscent of the updated Jimmy Reed style that the Vaughan Brothers popularized in the early 80s.  Greene also utilizes his first instrument (the tenor saxophone) on the fast swing ‘Look Out Baby’, which may feature the most blazing guitar solo on the record.

WALKING IN CIRCLES is Greene’s tribute to his Blues heroes and influences as well as his bid to re-establish himself as one of the era’s best up and coming Blues-Rock guitarists. “I love this music and want to be respectful of the form and history yet still be true to myself and my musical goals,” says Greene. “If That means things start to rock out, get experimental, loud and crazy, or I choose to cover more traditional territory, it’s all part of what I love about the Blues and its musical off shoots.”  None other than Alligator Records founder Bruce Iglauer recently told Greene, “You definitely have talent. I’m hearing you as being a strong player with a good blues-rock feel and some real chops.” Legendary British studio wizard and solo artist Alan Parsons was quoted as saying, “Alastair should be out playing with the biggest bands in the world. I believe it's just a matter of time.”  Regardless of quotes, resumes’, and high profile names, WALKING IN CIRCLES is sure to perk up some ears, put some smiles on some faces, and get some feet tappin’. It may even inspire some booty shakin’, head bangin’, and spontaneous partyin’.  The Blues is for everyone, from “those about to rock” to those in their rocking chairs.  Alastair will show you how and why.

JUKE JOINT FESTIVAL - CLARKSDALE, MS - through Sunday, April 18, 2010

JUKE JOINT FESTIVAL

Our 2010 edition of Juke Joint Festival is dedicated to Wesley Jefferson, Sam Carr and Miss Sarah Moore.

Spring is just around the corner, and that means the world’s one and only Juke Joint Festival will be here before you know it. The date: Saturday, April 17, 2010. With Related Events on Friday, April 16th and Sunday, April 18th 2010. The place: Clarksdale, Mississippi.

What is the Juke Joint Festival? It’s a positive event for everyone in Clarksdale. It’s good for families, businesses, musicians and tourists alike. The festival itself combines an international “blues festival” with a community-minded “small-town fair,” creating a strong and memorable event like no other in the universe. It’s organized by the Clarksdale Downtown Development Association (CDDA) and staffed by enthusiastic volunteers. This “half small-town fair, half blues festival” does more than simply
entertain attendees. It aims to educate and enlighten native Deltans and blues tourists alike through a series of performances, exhibits, and presentations involving music, art, storytelling, film, and children’s events. The event mixes visitors with locals and showcases the economic power of cultural tourism, turning average Deltans into ambassadors for the region.

Speaking of economics, last year’s festival was our most successful yet with full hotels, doubled attendance and expanded press coverage. The Juke Joint Festival makes every effort to keep vendors, talent and suppliers as local as possible. A family-friendly event also provides a bus service at night to discourage drinking and driving between music venues. For more information and pictures from last year’s inaugural event, log on to
www.jukejointfestival.com.

The event includes a Silent Auction, Blues Workshop, and Live Performances by The SaNa Band and "Stoop Down Man", Chick Willis.

Through narration and song, the SaNa Band compares the three stage Blues Problem-Solving Method to the six stage Social Work Problem-Solving Method. The Band probes the content of Blues songs and explains how the Blues helped African slaves develop spiritual toughness in the face of loss and separation and direct their energies toward the task of survival.

This interactive performance describes how to integrate the healing properties of the Blues into everyday life or in professional practice and prepare for the arrival of a brighter day, a new beginning, a transformation, or a change.

About the Chicken Raid - Tribute to FRANK EDWARDS

The Chicken Raid is an annual music festival honoring legendary Atlanta bluesman Mr. Frank Edwards. Proceeds from this year's event will go to the Edwards' family, as well as the Atlanta Community Food Bank.

Previous Chicken Raid recipients have included: Music Maker Relief Foundation, Lil Joe Burton Hip Foundation and the Sean Costello Memorial Fund for Bipolar Research.

Frank Edwards left home at 14 and played guitar and harmonica alongside Tampa Red. As World War II approached, Edwards joined seminal Mississippi bluesman Tommy McClennan and headed North, recording eight sides for OKeh in 1941 with Washboard Sam. After being discharged from the army he cut two songs for Regal in 1949, after which he continued playing on the street corners, juke joints and restaurants, before hitting the festival circuit during the folk revival.

Thanks to Pete Lowry, Edwards released his first full album “Done Some Travelin’” in 1972 through Trix. When not onstage, the iconic Edwards, or “Mr. Frank” as he was commonly known, was a familiar face at the clubs, supporting other blues musicians in Atlanta. He joined the roster of Music Maker artists in the 1990’s, performing festivals once again before quietly passing away on his return home from a recording session in North Carolina for the Music Maker label on March 22, 2002.
